A bubble chart is a scatter chart where each point also has a size, letting you show three numeric dimensions at once - for example value, growth, and volume in a single view.
When you have a third measure worth showing alongside an X/Y relationship - market size on top of price and share, say - and want it encoded as the size of each point.
Each bubble needs X, Y, and a size value. Keep the number of bubbles modest, since overlapping circles get hard to read.
